About The Parish
Sacred Heart Parish was founded in 1952 by a group of zealous Chinese Catholics in Cebu City who, with the blessing of the Archbishop, requested the Jesuits of the China Mission to minister to their pastoral needs. Originally dedicated to Our Lady Queen of China, it began as a chapel at the ground floor of the Cebu Cathedral Convento.
Under Fr. Arthur Baur, S.J., the community grew rapidly. A new lot on Jakosalem Street was acquired — purchased at half the prevailing market price — and the present church was constructed with enthusiastic support from the Cebuano Chinese community. Its first Mass was celebrated on Christmas Eve, 1960.
Safeguarding Protocol
Sacred Heart Parish is committed to creating a safe and nurturing environment for all members of the community, especially children and vulnerable individuals. Our safeguarding protocol, aligned with the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Cebu and the Society of Jesus, ensures that all parish activities, volunteers, and personnel uphold the highest standards of child protection and dignity of persons.
Childrean and youth program
Our children and youth ministry — rooted in Ignatian spirituality — empowers young members of the parish community to deepen their relationship with God and one another. Through catechesis, community service, retreats, and peer fellowship, we guide the next generation to become men and women for others in the tradition of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Masses
Sunday Masses are held at 6:00 AM, 7:30 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:00 AM, 5:30 PM, and 7:00 PM. Weekday Masses are at 6:30 AM and 6:00 PM. Confessions are heard on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 5:30 to 6:00 PM, and during Masses.
Baptism
Baptism is the Sacrament of Initiation, by which a person becomes a member of the People of God, the Church. He/She receives the life of our risen Lord and is destined for heaven.
Weddings
When the Catholic Church teaches that marriage between two baptized persons is a sacrament, it is saying that the couple’s relationship expresses in a unique way the unbreakable bond of love between Christ and his people.
Anointing of the Sick
The Anointing of the Sick is the Church’s sacrament of healing and comfort for the gravely ill, elderly, or those preparing for surgery. Priests are available to administer this sacrament at the parish or in homes and hospitals. Please contact the parish office to arrange a visit.
Family Life-Ministries
Sacred Heart Parish offers dedicated programs to support couples and families at every stage of life. Whether preparing for the sacrament of marriage or growing together in faith after the wedding, our family life ministries — rooted in the Gospel and Ignatian values — walk with families toward a deeper, more intentional life of love and service.
Pre-Cana is the required marriage preparation program for couples planning to wed in the Catholic Church. At Sacred Heart Parish, the program covers the theology of Christian marriage, natural family planning, communication, conflict resolution, and the spiritual dimensions of married life. Sessions are led by trained married couples and a chaplain from the Society of Jesus. Couples are encouraged to register at least six months before their planned wedding date.
Post-Cana is a continuing formation program for married couples who wish to deepen their relationship with each other and with God. Through regular gatherings, recollections, and couple discussions, Post-Cana helps spouses grow in their vocation — supporting one another through the joys and challenges of married life. The program is also an opportunity for couples to build community with fellow parishioners on the same journey of faith.
Counseling
Sacred Heart Parish, through the guidance of our Jesuit community, offers pastoral counseling services open to all who are in need of spiritual, emotional, or relational support. All counseling sessions are treated with the utmost confidentiality and care.
Our general counseling service provides a safe, confidential space for individuals facing personal challenges, spiritual crises, grief, or life transitions. Sessions are facilitated by trained pastoral counselors and Jesuit priests who accompany individuals with compassion and discernment. To schedule an appointment, please contact the parish office during regular hours.
Family counseling at Sacred Heart Parish addresses the relational and spiritual challenges that families often face — including parenting difficulties, marital struggles, sibling conflict, and intergenerational tensions. Our counselors draw on Ignatian principles of discernment and the healing power of the Gospel to help families restore harmony, communication, and a shared sense of God’s purpose in their home.
